Adaptive Reuse of the Historic Electric Steel Grain Silo_2017
Minneapolis, Minnesota. University of Minnesota MArch.
This project is located in the historic district of Minneapolis grain elevators and is on the periphery of the Minneapolis University of Minnesota campus, The Electric Steel Elevators have held its own in the claim for significant mill structures in the city, but has since been torn down for expansion of the University athletic village. This proposal serves as a what-if scenario as a case for adaptive reuse for these historic structures. In this proposal, the silos are programmed as a major cultural destination for the area. The proposal includes a theater with ancillary working and learning spaces, and additional student housing units. The variety of program seeks to serve as proof statement for multiple applications for urban adaptive reuse for silo structures, and the combination of spaces together serve to display the existing structure as an opportunity for a comprehensive urban model for living, working, and entertainment. This proposal is an exercise for a half-semester comprehensive detailing studio at the University of Minnesota.
